Locally grown North Florida.

Seeds origin: North Florida

Seeds are harvested from non-GMO, organically grown Mucuna Pruriens plant.

Grown and available all year from sunny North Florida, without the use of pesticides. Growing Information: Velvet beans are relatively easy to grow.

Plant the beans one inch deep in a potting mixture or in the ground. Keep them warm, damp and in full sun. Flowering typically begins 45-50 days after sowing. Plants should be given structure to grab onto. This plant enjoys high humidity.

Soak seeds in a wet paper towel for few hours before sowing. Plant seeds 1 inch deep in the amended soil. If growing on a trellis, install it now so you won't disturb or damage the roots once they start growing.

Dig out an area 4 inches by 4 inches per each plant you want to grow. Mix the dugout soil with 1 part compost to 1 part soil and replace in the hole. Planting should be in spring and in a full sun location in zones 7 or warmer, after all chance of frost has passed and soil temperature is at least 65 F. (18 C). Water well immediately after planting and then water to keep the soil moist. If the top of the soil feels dry, it's time to water.

Velvet bean plants naturally fix nitrogen in the soil so they don’t need any additional nitrogen fertilizer. They do respond well to phosphorus.

Climate and Soil: The crop grows in all types of soils, but sandy loam soil with good drainage and pH between 5.50 to 7.50 is preferred. It thrives in sub-tropical to tropical climate with a minimum temperature of 15°C in winter and maximum of 38°C in summer months. The crop is seen growing in varied climate such as coastal humid climate to dry arid climate. Hence the crop is said to be highly acclimatizing and adaptive.

Mucuna pruriens is a tropical legume native to Africa and tropical Asia and widely naturalized and cultivated. Its English common names include velvet bean, Bengal velvet bean, Florida velvet bean, Mauritius velvet bean, Yokohama velvet bean, cowage, cowitch, lacuna bean, and Lyon bean.
